How to Spot the Early Signs of Ovarian Cancer
- Posted on: Apr 19 2025
Ovarian cancer is often called a “silent” disease because its early symptoms can be vague and easily mistaken for other common health issues. However, recognizing these warning signs early can make a critical difference in outcomes. At Grace Obstetrics & Gynecology in Fort Worth and Granbury, TX, we want to help you understand how to spot the early signs of ovarian cancer—and when it’s time to talk to your provider.
Common Symptoms to Watch For
Although symptoms can be subtle, they are not completely silent. Pay attention to changes in your body, especially if they last more than a few weeks. Early signs of ovarian cancer may include:
- Bloating or noticeable abdominal swelling
- Feeling full quickly when eating
- Pelvic or abdominal pain or pressure
- Frequent or urgent urination
These symptoms may come and go, but persistence is key. If you experience any of the above nearly daily for two to three weeks, it’s important to get checked.
Other Possible Symptoms
While less common, some women with early-stage ovarian cancer may also experience:
- Unexplained fatigue
- Low back pain
- Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation
- Menstrual irregularities
- Pain during intercourse
Of course, these symptoms can also occur with non-cancerous conditions. That’s why it’s important not to panic—but not to ignore them, either.
Who Is at Risk?
Understanding your risk can help you make informed decisions about your health. You may be at higher risk of ovarian cancer if you:
- Are over age 50
- Have a family history of ovarian, breast, or colorectal cancer
- Carry BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutations
- Have never been pregnant
- Have used estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for an extended time
If you fall into any of these categories, talk to your provider about whether additional monitoring is right for you.
Why Regular Checkups Matter
Unfortunately, there is no routine screening test for ovarian cancer in women who are not high risk. That makes it even more important to stay up to date on annual gynecologic exams. Your provider may be able to detect abnormalities during a pelvic exam, and imaging or blood tests may be recommended if symptoms are present.
At Grace Obstetrics & Gynecology, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t wait—early evaluation and care can make all the difference.
