A Mother’s Day Gift to Yourself: Why Your Annual Well-Woman Visit Matters

Every May, we celebrate the women who show up for their children, their partners, their parents, their colleagues, and their communities. But somewhere in all of that showing up, it’s easy to push your own health to the back burner.
This Mother’s Day, we want to encourage you to give yourself one of the most meaningful gifts you can: a well-woman visit.
It’s not glamorous. It doesn’t come in a box with a ribbon. But it might be the most important thing you do all year for yourself and for the people who love you.
What Is a Well-Woman Visit?
A well-woman visit is a comprehensive annual appointment focused on your overall gynecological health and preventive care. It’s not just for when something is wrong, in fact, it’s most valuable when everything seems fine.
During your visit at Grace, your provider will review your health history and any changes since your last appointment, perform a physical exam, and discuss any symptoms or concerns you’ve been hesitant to bring up. Depending on your age and health history, your visit may also include:
- Pap smear: Cervical cancer screening is one of the most effective preventive tools in women’s health. Current guidelines recommend Pap smears every 3 years for women 21–65, or every 5 years combined with HPV testing for women 30–65.
- Breast health screening: Your provider will discuss your risk factors, perform or recommend a clinical breast exam, and talk with you about when to schedule a mammogram if you haven’t already.
- Contraception and family planning: Whether you’re done having children, thinking about starting a family, or somewhere in between, this is the time to review your options and make sure your current method is still the best fit.
- Sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening: Routine STI screening is recommended for sexually active women and is a standard part of comprehensive preventive care.
- Menopause management: If you’re approaching or in menopause, your annual visit is the right time to talk about symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disruption, vaginal dryness, and mood changes and what can be done.
Why Many Women Skip It (And Why That’s Worth Reconsidering)
We hear it all the time: ‘I’ve been meaning to schedule that.’ Life gets busy. Kids need to be somewhere. Work doesn’t stop. The appointment that’s just for you keeps getting pushed.
But many of the conditions we screen for during a well-woman visit: cervical cancer, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, breast abnormalities are most treatable when caught early, often before symptoms appear. Skipping years of preventive care doesn’t mean nothing is happening; it means we lose the window to catch things early.
You Deserve the Same Care You Give Everyone Else
At Grace, we believe that women deserve providers who take their time, listen carefully, and treat them as partners in their own health. Your annual visit isn’t just a checkbox; it’s a conversation, a relationship, and an investment in the decades of health ahead of you.
If you haven’t had a well-woman visit in the past year, consider this your gentle nudge. Call our Fort Worth or Granbury office at 817.776.4722 to schedule your visit. Your family needs you to be healthy. And so do you.
