When having trouble getting pregnant, women should learn more about their ovulation process. Test strips and kits are now available over the counter to help predict when you are ovulating and most fertile. Read on to learn more about ovulation test strips, and how they can help you get pregnant.

What Is Ovulation?

Ovulation is when a woman’s body releases a mature egg from an ovary. The egg moves down the fallopian tube and stays there for 12 to 24 hours. At this time the egg can be fertilized by sperm. This happens around day 14 of a 28-day menstrual cycle.

What Are Ovulation Test Strips?

Ovulation test strips are a product available over the counter that helps detect when you are ovulating and therefore most likely to get pregnant.

How Do Ovulation Test Strips Work?

The ovulation test strips work by testing for luteinizing hormone which is what signals the release of an egg from the ovaries, also known as the process of ovulation. One to two days before ovulation the level of luteinizing hormone in the body increases. During this time is when a woman is most fertile and most likely to get pregnant. Ovulation test strips can tell you when your luteinizing hormone is highest, therefore when you are ovulating and most likely to get pregnant.

How Do You Use Ovulation Test Strips?

Make sure to read the directions that come with the ovulation test strip kit. Similar to a pregnancy test, most work by urinating on the strip for the amount of time that the instructions indicate. The ovulation strip will react to the urine and display either one or two lines. One line usually indicates that you are not ovulating and two lines indicate that you are ovulating. If you are trying to get pregnant you should have sex while you are ovulating.
