Summer can be such a happy and fun filled time of year. There are tons of activities, events, and trips to fill your time. During all the days of fun sometimes maintaining health can slip your mind or be on the back burner. If you want to continue to have fun but also stay healthy throughout the summer use the following tips on what to avoid. These tips are easy, user friendly, and don’t take much effort.

1. Avoid Dehydration

Take a water bottle with you wherever you go. Even if you are just running a few errands, having some water in the car can be helpful. It is easy to get overheated walking to the store from your parking space when the summer heat is intense. Do the same for any family member that comes with you. If you prefer ice cold water, pack a cooler or purchase an insulated cup.

2. Avoid Sugary Beverages

It is tempting to purchase a sports drink, soda, lemonade, or ice tea when the temperature is on the rise but many of those beverages have high amounts of sugar in them. It is better to avoid the sugary beverages and instead flavor your water with lemon, lime, or other types of fruit.

3. Avoid Heat Stroke

There are so many fun activities to enjoy during the summer months that sometimes we forget about how the rising temperatures can affect our bodies. Be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of heat stroke such as fatigue, weakness, headache, cramps, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and low blood pressure. When the outside temperatures are high try to stay in the shade, stay hydrated, and if possible, stay inside during the hottest hours of the day. Children and older people are especially vulnerable to heat stroke.

4. Avoid Sunburn

Protecting your skin by wearing sunscreen, hats, and clothing is key to avoiding sunburn. Apply sunscreen every day and wear protective clothing. No one enjoys sunburn and it can eventually lead to skin cancer.

5. Avoid Bugs

Insects seem to love summer also but bug bites on humans can lead to skin issues and disease. Avoid bug bites by applying bug spray and staying away from any areas that may contain a lot of harmful insects.

6. Avoid Unhealthy Foods

Enjoying summertime foods such as barbecue and ice cream is delightful but it is important to not go overboard. Enjoy those foods in moderation.

7. Avoid Being Sedentary

Sometimes those extra hot days during the summer is a good time to catch up on your favorite TV shows or read a book. Just remember to make sure you are getting enough physical activity throughout the day. Get up at least every hour and move around.
